Do you view a home as more of an investment or a place to live?

I’m just curious as to your opinion, considering the current state of affairs with the housing market. If you had to choose ONE way to classify a home purchase, would you say it is more of an investment or just a place to live, a roof over a person’s head.
EDIT:

@ "Landlord":

You obviously misread the question. It is an either or question. I try to use plain language on here, but sometimes people still don’t get it. **Sigh** and we wonder why newspapers are written on a thrid grade reading level.

People should view it as a home if they are living in it. But some still view these type of residence as investments.. and so they gamble with it as an attempt to make money.

I presume you are referring to the house a person is staying/living in… since u used the word "Home". It doesn’t take rocket scientist to understand your question.
U have to realize that there is not an education standard law in place for people to have the internet. So you end up with idiots answering questions. And it doesn’t take a degree either to be a "LandLord"… so the same rule apply to them.

A home is place to live.

Viewing housing as an investment, or worse, a source of quick profit is a large part of the housing mess (from the POV of the individual)

I do both. The house I live in was bought for the neighborhood and is my sanctuary. It does not matter to me what it cost or the present value, it is the nest I have placed my children in.

But, for my rentals, those are investments. While their present value does not really matter to me, as I am not selling, the amount of cash flow each generates does.

I invest is houses, but I live in a HOME. If that makes any sense to you. I see them as entirely different.

As a home to live in for now

When I get older and retire hopefully it will be worth enough for me to sell and move to a warmer climate
