Which high rise skyscrapers are worth visiting to get a bird’s eye view of NY and are they free to view from the top ?
I imagine the visit is worthy during the day as well as the night ?
If you plan to see the Empire State Building, order an "attraction pass" that will give you free admision and then use it to get to the Statue of Liberty instead of passing by for free pn the Staten Island Ferry which can be obtained from the South Street Ferry Terminal.

That would be the Staten Island Ferry which docks at South Street ferry terminal.
You can’t go to the top of any tall building for free, unfortunately.

Staten Island Ferry at South Ferry, Manhattan is correct. Best free harbor tour in world. No free "observation decks" though. That is true. But Terrace in the Sky restaurant has great views, you can have drink and enjoy. I’d go to the "Top of the Rock" at 40 Rockefeller Center. At 872 feet it’s one of tallest buildings in NYC and the 2nd tallest with an observation deck. (RIP WTC) You can see the Empire State lit up, Central Park and lots more. It’s more dramatic I think than the Empire state and about the same price. Do it at night for sure. It’s worth it.

1) Staten Island ferry.
2) Rockefeller Ctr or Empire State Bldg.

In regards to the free ferry, that’s the Staten Island Ferry, which departs from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in South Ferry.
In regards to the best skyscrapers worth visiting to get a bird’s eye view of New York City, that will be the Empire State Building.
Good luck

Take the 4 or 5 train to bowling green or the 1 train to south ferry. You can catch the staten island ferry there. It is a 30 min ride one way. You get a pretty good view of the statue of liberty that way..you can go up the Grand Marquis in Times Square for free but you cant see out. If you walk in and act like you have business there and go to the bank of elevators and punch in the 45 floor. When you get up there, the center section of the hotel is open all the way down to like the 8th floor. i think. It is a long ways down and is interesting. It also is interestin to take the glass elevator up. However, once in a while someone will stop you an tell you to leave…the dare is half the fun!
